(0933-0996) |
Richard I "the Fearless" 3rd Duke of Normandy
Other names for Richard were Richard 4th Duke of Normandy and Richard the Fearless. General Notes: Duke Richard I married Emma of France (who had not issue) but had numerous concubines as well - causing uncertainty as to the legitimacy of his heirs. Eventually he married one of his concubines, Gunnor, to legitimize some of these children - including the next Duke Richard II. Other sons (by other mothers) were given prominent landholdings and positions. This includes Godfey(Geoffrey) of Brionne and William of Exmes & Eu. Research Notes: Louis IV of France took the boy-duke into his protective custody, apparently intent upon reuniting Normandy to the crown's domains; but in 945 Louis was captured by the Normans, and Richard was returned to his people. Richard withstood further Carolingian attempts to subdue his duchy and, in 987, was instrumental in securing the French crown for his brother-in-law, the Robertian Hugh Capet. [Encyclopaedia Britannica CD '97] Richard married Gunnora De Crepon of Denmark, daughter of Harold Blaatand King of Denmark and Unknown, in 962 in France. (Gunnora De Crepon of Denmark was born in 936 and died in 1031.) Richard next married Papia (1st Concubine). (Papia (1st Concubine) was born in 935.) Richard next married Emma of France (Capet) in 956. (Emma of France (Capet) was born in 943.) |
