Charles fought for the crown as the Comte d'Eudes had been elected King of France in 887, after successfully defending Paris from a major Norsemen attack. Eudes thereby deposed Charles the Fat who died the next year. Eudes ruled from 887 through 883 unopposed (as an early Capetian king), then fought Charles the Simple for the throne but died in 898 allowing unquestioned right to go to Charles III.

Count Eudes, son of "Robert the Strong" was likely related to Queen Ementrude, daughter of an earlier Count Eudes and wife of Charles II (the Bald), thus the grandmother of this Charles III.

In 911 Charles III came to terms with the Norsemen and in return for safety for Paris and the river Seine, gave "Normandy" to Rollo the Dane.

• Treaty of St. Clair-Sur-Epte: Gave Normandy to Norse leader Rollo to protect, 911. Also gave his daughter Gisella to Rollo and made Rollo the first Duke of Normandy.

• King of Lorraine: Previously separate from France, 911. Shortlived as he was challenged and lost his crown. His son however would reacquire the crown.

• Deposted: Barons revolted - Elected Robert I, Brother of Odo, 922.

• Possession of entire kingdom: Death of rival, Eudes (aka Odo), 898.

Charles married Frederune de Lotharingie (Hamalant) in 907. (Frederune de Lotharingie (Hamalant) was born in 886 in Hamaland, Netherlands and died in 917 in Paris.)

Charles next married Princess of England Eadgifu (Edgiva, Gewissa) Of Wessex Queen of the Franks, daughter of King Edward I Of England "The Elder" and Edgiva of Kent or Aelflaeda of Ethelheim, in 918. (Princess of England Eadgifu (Edgiva, Gewissa) Of Wessex Queen of the Franks was born in 902 in Wessex, England and died in 955 in France.)
