William (IV) De Courcy
General Notes:
Last of DeCourcy line as no heir.
Inherited Stogursey lands as a minor. Properties administered by William le Puher and Hugh Pincerna.
Exercised control by 1189.
Likely joined Richard the Lionhearted on crusade, but returned by 1194 where a payment is made by him to control his lands.
Claimed the hereditary title of dapifer (seneschal) to the King of England. (used by all the Stogursey lords to date).
Died unmarried without heir. Properties passed to widowed sister Alice, who married (2nd) and passed control of all properties to Warin fitz Gerald.
Some cadet DeCourcy lines continued - but with minor property holdings.
WILLIAM [IV] de Courcy ([1163/64]-before Oct 1194). The Rotuli de Dominabus of 1185 records “Willelmus filius Willelmi de Curci…in custodia Domini Regis et per eum in custodia Roberti le Poher…xx annorum” and his land “Werefeld"[2815]. WILLIAM de Courcy (-after 1186). The Red Book of the Exchequer refers to "honor Willelmi de Curcy dapiferi xlv l x s" in Dorset, Somerset in [1186/87][2838].
